A body-based path for healing what insight alone cannot reach.
Somatic psychotherapy helps us listen beneath the story— to the nervous system, the body, and the deeper wisdom that formed long before words.
At Asheville Center for Inner Healing, somatic psychotherapy is offered as part of an integrative, trauma-informed approach to healing complex trauma as well as other mental health conditions. This work is especially supportive for people who have already done meaningful inner work, developed insight into their patterns, and still find themselves reacting from old survival responses when stress, intimacy, conflict, or vulnerability arise.
You may understand why a pattern exists. You may know it began in childhood, in attachment wounds, in overwhelming life experiences, or in earlier seasons of survival. And yet, in the moment, your body may still tighten, brace, shut down, defend, collapse, or reach for the familiar blueprint.
Somatic work helps us meet these patterns at the level where they live: in the body, the nervous system, and the unconscious intelligence of survival.
Somatic Psychotherapy
When Trauma Lives in the Body
Trauma is not only something we remember. It is something the body learns.
When we experience stress, danger, attachment rupture, or overwhelm, the nervous system may move into fight, flight, freeze, fawn, or collapse. Muscles tighten. Breath becomes shallow. The body braces. We clamp down in an effort to stay safe.
These responses are not wrong. They are intelligent adaptations.
But when the body never fully gets to complete, release, or metabolize what happened, old survival energy can remain stuck in the system. Over time, this may show up as chronic tension, emotional reactivity, shutdown, anxiety, numbness, relational patterns, or the sense that “I know better, but I still can’t respond differently.”
Somatic psychotherapy supports the body in slowly, safely, and compassionately listening to what has been held. Rather than forcing change from the mind alone, we create conditions where the body can begin to soften, feel, integrate, and reorganize.
This is not about pushing through. It is about creating enough safety for the nervous system to do what it was always trying to do: protect you, complete the cycle, and return to more ease.
Working Beneath the Pattern
Many clients come to this work because talk therapy has helped them understand their story, but has not fully changed the way their body reacts.
You may notice patterns such as:
Feeling suddenly defensive, anxious, frozen, or ashamed in relationships
Knowing a reaction is “old,” but feeling unable to stop it in the moment
Repeating childhood blueprints in adult intimacy, conflict, work, or self-worth
Feeling disconnected from your body, your needs, your intuition, or your truth
Having insight, language and awareness, but still feeling stuck
In somatic psychotherapy, we work directly with the living pattern as it appears in the body. We may notice breath, posture, sensation, tightening, numbness, impulse, emotion, image, memory, or inner parts. The body becomes a doorway into the deeper material.
This work may be gentle, quiet, symbolic, emotional, spiritual, or deeply practical. Sometimes it includes archetypal imagery or inner figures. Sometimes it is simply about learning to feel the body again without overwhelm.
The body often knows where healing wants to go before the conscious mind can explain it.
An Integrative Approach: Somatic Work, EMDR, IFS & Depth Healing
My training and clinical approach weave together somatic, trauma-informed methods with EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and depth-oriented psychotherapy.
Somatic work helps us listen to the nervous system.
EMDR can help the brain and body reprocess traumatic material that has remained charged or unfinished.
Internal Family Systems helps us relate compassionately to the parts of us that protect, react, hide, please, fight, numb, or carry pain.
Together, these approaches support healing from the inside out, not by trying to override the body, but by learning how to listen to it.
This is a mind-body-spirit approach to trauma healing. The mind helps us understand. The body helps us feel and metabolize. The spirit helps us remember meaning, wholeness, and connection.
Many clients find it supportive to do one or two somatic sessions per month, with additional sessions for integration to allow the mind, emotions, and everyday life to catch up with what the body is processing.
Virtual & In-Person Somatic Psychotherapy
Somatic psychotherapy can be done virtually or in person.
Virtual sessions allow us to work with the body, breath, nervous system, parts, and trauma patterns from the comfort of your own space.
In-person sessions at Asheville Center for Inner Healing offer additional support for integration through access to our healing environment, including an indoor saltwater pool, saunas, and nature trails. These elements can help the body settle, soften, and continue integrating after deeper therapeutic work.
For some clients, the land, water, heat, quiet, and spaciousness become part of the healing process by giving the nervous system a felt experience of safety, restoration, and reconnection.
Who This Work May Support
Somatic psychotherapy may be a good fit if you:
Have complex trauma, attachment wounds, or long-standing relational patterns
Feel like your body reacts before your mind can catch up
Have done talk therapy or personal growth work but still feel stuck
Notice chronic tension, bracing, numbness, anxiety, or emotional flooding
Want to work with trauma gently, deeply, and at the level of the nervous system
Are drawn to an approach that honors the mind, body, and spirit
This work is not about fixing what is broken. It is about listening to what has been carrying too much for too long.
The body is not the obstacle to healing. Often, it is the guide.
